How Low Has Mail Volume Gone?

Mail volume growth has gone south – at least for now. According to the U.S. Postal Service fiscal year 2006 report – total mail volume experienced slow growth. But there’s a bright side to USPS’ ho-hum start.

The report’s timeframe is from Oct. 1, 2005 to Jan. 31, 2006. Some classes of mail such as Priority Mail and Standard Mail did experience a slight increase in volume, but others took a dip. According to USPS, First-Class Mail volume is 562 million pieces less than the same period last year.

Here’s a quick look at mail volume growth per class:

• First-Class volume decreased 1.6 percent
• Standard Mail was up 1.5 percent
• Priority Mail shot up 7.5 percent
• Express Mail was up 5.5 percent
• Periodicals got zilch, zero volume
• Package Services increased 4.1 percent
• International mail took a 2.1 percent dive
