Validation the Simon & Schuster Way
Bad contact data was costing Simon & Schuster tens
of thousands of dollars in labor and shipping fees.
Every year, the book publisher was paying processing
fines to United Parcel Service (UPS) when it sent
review copies of books to journalists and producers
for editorial consideration. While a bad shipping
label didn’t necessarily rule out a book being
delivered, UPS would ding Simon & Schuster $5 per
order if the addresses needed to be corrected.
What’s more, if the package was returned to the
publisher, UPS would still charge the fee, in
addition to Simon & Schuster bearing the cost of
processing and sending the package a second time.
Tom Masciovecchio, publishing systems director for
Simon & Schuster, immediately saw the value of data
correction software. After evaluating several
products, he selected Address Object from Melissa
Data. Address errors can be everywhere. Botched
address lines, partial ZIP codes, misspelled cities,
wrong phone numbers, or chunks of missing
information can bog down a CRM system. Address
hygiene programs fix these errors, standardize the
records, and provide useful geographic enhancements.
For less than the price of a laptop computer, you
can keep your enterprise systems clean and healthy.
