What
Leading Databases Do You Rely On?
What are the leading databases used for internal and
external access? Most respondents rely on Oracle 9i
databases for both internal and Web-based access to
data, according to a recent survey by the
Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG), an
association of Oracle technology and database
professionals. Do you fit this mold?
The IOUG initiated the survey to develop a clearer
picture of the ways Oracle-based enterprises manage
high availability and disaster tolerance. According
to the report,
while Microsoft SQL Server is deployed at a majority
of sites for internal usage, only a third expose SQL
Server to external end-users, such as customers or
trading partners.
Most sites have dozens of databases running across
their enterprises, the survey shows. Almost three
out of four (74 percent) have more than five
instances of Oracle deployed throughout their
organizations. A quarter even report having more
than 100 Oracle databases within their enterprises.
Deployment of non-Oracle environments is a little
lower – 46 percent report having more than five
non-Oracle databases running within their
enterprises, at about 13 percent reach the 100 mark,
the survey reports.
But the number of databases varies according to
company size. The survey found that 61 percent of
the largest organizations, those reporting more than
$500 million in annual revenues, had more than 50
databases, versus 17 percent of the smallest
organizations (less than $50 million).
In most cases, these databases – especially the
Oracle environments – need to be up and available
for 24x7 continuous operation, the survey shows.
About 82 percent of respondents say they need to
have at least some of their Oracle databases running
continuously.
In fact, four out of 10 sites (39 percent) say this
applies to the majority of their Oracle databases in
production. Only 46 percent indicated that their
non-Oracle databases needed to be available 24x7.
The survey’s respondents were asked to indicate how
many hours per week were spent on various critical
tasks. Among tasks occupying five hours or more each
week are database administration (41 percent),
ongoing maintenance/operations (29 percent),
performance tuning (29 percent), and application
development (22 percent).
