Doing Business in Emerging Markets – Part 3 India

Bob Hull, Director of Business Development, Melissa Data

Emerging markets are a hot topic for companies that sell globally, and India is at the top of the list with China as one of the two largest emerging markets in the world. We’ve dealt with China in a past article, so we’ll show you how to overcome one of the biggest problems in doing business in India here.

Address quality directly affects your ability to communicate and deliver your product to customers. With so much business being done via the Internet, capturing accurate address information using Web forms is now a key factor for almost any business. If not done correctly, that address will be bad from the outset and do nothing but waste money in shipping costs and frustrate new customers with avoidable delays or non-delivery.

The key is to capture accurate address information from the beginning. You do that by making sure you design your Web forms correctly for each individual country, because there’s no one-size-fits-all format where international addresses are concerned.

So, if you’re looking to do business in India, use the following address format so that your letters and parcels get delivered to the right address and on time. One little mistake could make all the difference in the world.

India
Example address format
Mr. I.K. Taneja
Flat 100
Triveni Apartments
Pitampur
NEW DELHI 110034
Addresses written in a non-native language will be written in English. The address may contain the state or union territory name. Post office box deliveries may be to P.O. Box or to Post Bag.

Indian postal codes (PIN codes) consist of a block of 6 digits. The first two indicate the state, the third the sorting centre, and the last three a large town, a group of post offices, or a delivery office. Postal codes are sometimes found written in the format NNN[ ]NNN or NNN-NNN.

Indian cities are increasingly renaming themselves in local-language equivalents and dropping the English names used up to now.

India has 28 states and 7 union territories, used in addresses.
