 Doing Business in Emerging Markets – Part 2 Brazil
    Bob Hull, Director of Business Development, Melissa Data

In the last issue we talked about correct address formats for mailing in China, which many believe is the number one emerging market in the world.

In this issue we’ll cover Brazil. Along with China, Russia and India, Brazil is considered one of the “Big Four” emerging markets.

Even though many countries are experiencing tough economic times right now, Brazil is expected to weather the current downturn well due to financial policies that have kept interest rates much higher than inflation and a friendly, welcoming attitude to foreign investment.

What this means to your business is that Brazil remains attractive if what you have to sell is a good fit for their market.

So, if you’re looking to do business in Brazil, you need to make sure you’re using a correct address format so that your letters and parcels get delivered to the right address and on time. One little mistake could make all the difference in the world.

Brazil
Addresses are written in the format:
Form of address
Name
Thoroughfare type[ ]Thoroughfare Name{[, ]}number{[, ]apartment etc. indicators}
{Neighbourhood}
postal code[ ]SETTLEMENT[ - ]STATE CODE

For example:
Sr.
Manuel Paes de Carvalho
Rua São Luis 3, 2º andar
12003-213 BELÉM - PA

Addresses may also be found with the postal code written on its own at the bottom of the address block, like this:
Sr.
Manuel Paes de Carvalho
Rua São Luis 3, 2º andar
BELÉM - PA
12003-213

Postal codes may also be found on the last line of an address by themselves (i.e. under the line containing the settlement name and state).

Larger cities are divided into neighbourhoods (barrios) which may be found in addresses.

The planned city of Brasilía has no street names. It is divided into sectors (setores, SBN), which are in turn divided into quadras (Q) and then into blocos. These indicators are used in addresses as, for example:
Departamento Polícia
SBN 2 - Quadra 23 - Bloco 7 - 1º andar
79800-122 BRASÍLIA - DF

The word for post office box is caixa postal, abbreviated to CP.

Postal codes (Codificacao de Endereçamento Postal, CEP, introduced in 1992) consists of 8 digits in the format:
99999[-]999
