China – standard address format dilemma
Currently there is no standard address format in
China. The reason is because the Chinese people tend
to write an address in any format they prefer, which
creates a huge headache for China Post. Postal
workers can only suggest a format, but the decision
is left up to the individual, and getting more than
1.3 billion people to change their addressing ways
could take a very long time.
For international mail, when it arrives in China,
and does not use a Chinese character set, a special
crew of postal workers has to translate the address
into Chinese before it can be delivered. It’s a
manual process. At this point in time the Chinese
postal database has 66,776,807 deliverable addresses
associated with six-digit postal codes.
New licensing for the UK
New license terms for Royal Mail (United Kingdom)
are effective as of September 1, 2007. These changes
mainly affect customers using Interactive Web
Services for British addresses. Also, new privacy
regulations now require additional paperwork from
customers outside the European Economic Area.
World Post Day
World Post day is celebrated each year on the 9th of
October as the anniversary of the establishment of
the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in Bern,
Switzerland. It was declared World Post Day in 1969
by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan. The Posts
in many countries use the event to introduce or
promote new postal products and services.
The UPU has 191 member countries and they are an
agency of the United Nations that fulfils an
advisory, mediating and liaison role. They give
technical assistance where needed and set the rules
for international mail exchanges.
