How to Append Phone Numbers to Your Database

How do you append phone numbers to your database? And how do you know where you stand with the federal Do-Not-Call regulations? Chris Rowe, Melissa Data’s vice president of data enhancement services, shares his tricks of the trade.

Rowe states that the data itself and how you use the data determines your status. Most charities and political organizations are exempt from Do-Not-Call (DNC) rules, which means they can receive the optimal number of phone appends when their lists are processed. Also, you are exempt if you are reaching out to your existing customers. If your list contains prospects or leads, then you are not exempt from the rules.

Most services bureaus will ask for this information because they do not want to append phone numbers you can’t legally use. But ultimately it is your responsibility to scrub your list against the DNC file prior to each telemarketing campaign. Many vendors including Melissa Data will perform a DNC scrub on your behalf. List owners who request a DNC scrub must provide a SAN (Subscription Account Number) which they can obtain through the FTC website www.donotcall.gov.
