Postal Update
Andrei Kazmin, Sberbank CEO, has been proposed as
the head of Russia’s postal service by Prime
Minister Viktor Zubkov, and Russian President
Vladimir Putin has accepted the proposal. Kazmin has
been responsible for Russia’s largest state-owned
bank since 1996.
The Russian Post Federal State Unitary Enterprise
handles mail services throughout Russia. It has
approximately 415,000 employees and 40,000 offices.
Russian Post annually processes over 1.4 billion
letters, 38 million parcels and more than 188
million money transfers. The service is currently
headed by Igor Syrstov.

Note that the order of address lines in Russia is
the opposite to that used in Western Europe – the
postal code and town comes first, then the street
address, then the name of the person or company. The
name of the country comes above the top line, but as
the Russian postal authorities prefer that the
postal code is the first item in the address, the
country name is probably best written below the
other address lines.
Postal codes consist of a block of 6 digits. The
code has been in use since before the break-up of
the Soviet Union. The first three digits indicate
the region or large town, the last three the post
office.
