Doing Business in Emerging Markets: Part 4 Russia
Bob Hull, Director of Business Development, Melissa Data
Russia is considered one of the “Big Four” emerging
markets in the global economy and one you should
certainly consider if you sell your products
internationally. And before you make your move to do
business in Russia, you need to answer this most
important question:
How can you make sure that your letters and parcels
get delivered in the most efficient manner?
With so many different international address
formats—sometimes even within the same country—it
can be extremely confusing to capture this
information on a Web form or set it up within your
own database. One simple mistake can cause delivery
delays and increase postage costs.
Here’s the answer to the mailing address dilemma for
Russia: Follow the formatting information below, and
you’ll clear the way for the most timely, cost
efficient mail delivery, from Moscow to Vladivostok.
Russia
Russia has changed its format to a “western” form,
so that it is now written:
Family name
Given name(s)
Thoroughfare name[ ]building number{[ ]sub-building
information}
PLACE NAME{[ ]District[ ]Region}
Postal code
For example:
Ivanova
Jelena
prospekt Tverskaya 9, appart. 187
MOSCOU
103009
The house number may be found in front of the
thoroughfare name, especially where an address has
been transliterated.
A slash (/) in a building number in an address often
indicates a corner location, where the first number
indicates the building number on the named street,
and the second indicates the location on a second
street. Thus:
Nevsky prospect 4/24 is building number 4 on Nevsky
prospect, on a corner.
A hyphen (-) in a building number is often used to
split the building number and the apartment number.
Thus:
Nevsky prospect 123-12 is apartment 12, building 123
on the Nevsky prospect.
Floor levels are often given using Roman numerals.
The ground floor is floor I, first floor II, and so
on.
Post Office™ box
This is written Abonentny Yashik, abbreviated to A.R.
in Russian.
Postal codes
Postal codes consist of a block of 6 digits. The
code used is that in use since before the break-up
of the Soviet Union. The first three digits indicate
the region or large town, the last three the Post
Office. Postal codes can begin with a 1,2,3,4 or 6.
