Where to Start with Data Quality

Where to Start with Data Quality by David Loshin
Does it seem like there are too many details required to set up a data quality program? Overwhelmed at taking the first step? Let data quality expert David Loshin simplify the process by narrowing it to three simple tasks.

Ask Our Experts

Joseph Vertido, Data Quality AnalystQ: I'm trying to consolidate some duplicate records in my data, but I don't know how to get the best pieces of information for each column. What is the best way I can do this?

A: The concept of collapsing duplicate records into one, while using intelligent logic to select the best record for each domain is called Survivorship. Survivorship allows us to correctly consolidate duplicate records and ensures that no crucial pieces of information are lost. This can be achieved by creating specific rules that decide which value to select for each column in a group of duplicate records.

Our SQL Server Integration Services Plugin called MatchUp can help you implement anything from simple to complex Survivorship Rules with ease. Here are a few examples of Survivorship rules you can implement using the MatchUp SSIS Plugin:

      • Select the Phone Number that is Most Frequently Occurring
      • Select the Name with the Most Number of Characters
      • Select the Address with the Latest Date Stamp
      • Select the Email that has the Best Quality

Through Survivorship, this combination of rules can be enforced simultaneously when deciding which values to pick for each domain. Survivorship can also be automated and executed through a batch process. This makes us confident that in the record merging phase, we are always getting that best pieces of information.
