Should
Telemarketers Be A Little Wary?
Telemarketers might have a reason to worry, or at
least, sweat. It looks like more U.S. adults are
opting out of getting unsolicited phone calls at
home. Here’s what you need to know.
A recent poll conducted by market research firm
Harris Interactive reports about three-quarters of
U.S. adults (76 percent) have signed up for the
Federal Trade Commission’s National Do-Not-Call
Registry. This reflects a huge spike from Jan. 2004
when 57 percent reported they had registered for no
more calls.
Other interesting findings in the Harris Poll:
• The proportion of all adults who have seen, read
or heard about the registry has jumped slightly from
91 percent in Sept. 2004 to the current 94 percent.
• The number of adults who say they’ve signed up for
the registry has increased from 32 percent in Sept.
2003 to 57 percent in Jan. 2004.
• Over nine in 10 (92 percent) of those who have
registered report receiving fewer telemarketing
calls.
