107 Million Numbers on Do-Not-Call Registry
American’s don’t seem to like getting unsolicited
phone calls. According to a Federal Trade Commission
report, more than 107 million telephone numbers were
registered with the national do-not-call registry by
the end of 2005.
As a result of the registry, consumers are getting
fewer unwanted telemarketing calls, the report
states. It seems like Americans have embraced the
registry – in the first four days following its
launch on June 27, 2003, more than 10 million
numbers were registered. The numbers went up by the
time September came around. The report states that
nearly 52 million telephone numbers were on the
registry as of Sept. 30, 2003.
The FTC report also highlighted results from a
Harris Interactive survey, which illustrated the
continued success of the registry. The 2005 Harris
survey found that 76 percent of Americans had
registered for the registry, compared to 57 percent
in 2004. The Harris survey also revealed that 92
percent of U.S. adults who had placed their numbers
on the registry reported receiving fewer
telemarketing calls.
While all the numbers seem to be on the up and up –
the number of companies accessing the registry is
actually dropping. According to the FTC report, a
total of 11,919 unique entities have paid fees to
the registry, since its inception. In 2005, a total
of 6,794 entities paid fees totaling about $18
million, for registry access. But back in 2004, a
total of 7,734 entities paid fees totaling $14
million for registry access.
