 AIS Cuts Down on Bar Coding Costs

AIS (Apostolic Information Service) is a subscription-based service used by over 2,000 ministers nationwide. The service offers a library of more than 25,000 files on topics ranging from Bible studies, sermon outlines, evangelism programs, and ministry issues. Owned and run by Indiana Bible College, it has been in operation since 1991. In 2001, AIS invested in Melissa Data’s MAILERS+4 software to help them save money through bar coding. Here’s how AIS cut down on costs using the software.

AIS also mails out thousands of copies a year of their college magazine, as well as mailing labels for the college and church. In 2001, the company became displeased with the current program they were using. While it got the job done, it didn’t provide a bar-coding feature. This proved to be an inconvenience for AIS, who had recently discovered the discounts they could receive for bar coding their mail. After researching companies that had a bar coding product, AIS selected Melissa Data for their MAILERS+4 software.

Jaye Bannister, AIS’s office manager, says the “Presort” component is her favorite feature. “For example, we send mail to specific ministers in outside states and [geographically], it separates things automatically and makes life so much easier,” Bannister says.

According to Bannister, the most significant benefit to the company has been the savings. “We mail out approximately 14,000 magazines nationwide. That’s thousands of dollars a year in savings,” Bannister states. She goes on to report the most common types of errors found in these records are incomplete or inaccurate addresses. Therefore, having MAILERS+4 verify addresses has been an essential component to these savings. Returned mail can result in a significant amount of lost company revenue.

In addition to the software’s cost-saving advantages, Bannister has also come to appreciate MAILERS+4 “Print” component. Picture this scenario: It used to take AIS about 10 days to label their mailings for the college and church. The “Print” option reduced this period to three days. “It’s really cut down on the timeframe,” Bannister raves.

Bannister remains satisfied with the bar coding feature – the original reason for purchasing MAILERS+4. But it was the added verification, de-dupe and presort features of the product that simply enhanced the overall appeal.
