Maximizing Postal Discounts

If your organization processes any mailings throughout the year, you’re probably aware that the postage rates are going up, again, on January 27. And, there will be a few more new rules to follow if you want your mailings to quality for postal discounts. The biggest development surrounds the use of the Intelligent Mail® Barcode (IMb) for automation discounts. Keep it Moving!

The USPS also requires all First-Class and Standard Mail mailings to meet Move-Update requirements in order to qualify for automation and non-automation mailing discounts. That means that you must update your lists no more than 95 days prior to the date of mailing. You’ll find more info on the Move Update requirements in the Best Practices article here.

Important dates for mailers

January 27: New postage rates become effective.
January 28: USPS retires POSTNET and PLANET barcodes and
   automation price eligibility with POSTNET barcodes on all types
   of mail.
January 28: IMb required on all BRM, QBRM and PRM letters.
January 2014: Basic IMB will be retired and Full Service IMB will be
   the sole basis for automation rate eligibility.
